Summary

This game was probably the best boxing game ever released for the NES. You assume the role of a delightful chap known as "Little" Mac and must guide him on his quest to become the champion of the world. Sounds straightforward enough, doesn't it? Well, it would be if the reigning champion was someone other than Mike Tyson in his ferocious prime.

The game is very easy to pick up, with a simple control system that almost anybody could master. "Little" Mac has two punches (left and right), which can be directed towards the body or the head of an opponent. The uppercut is Mac's special punch, but you must time this manoeuvre to perfection or you will leave him open to a beating. To dodge your opponent's punches, Mac can move from side to side and block, and again, timing is essential.

One of the first things you notice about Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! is that the graphics are actually very good for a NES game. The sprites are clear and have a distinct cartoon feel about them, which complements the overall gameplay. The only downside is that there is only one music track in the game, but the sound effects of the punches landing more than make up for that. Also, a certain plumber known as Mario is the referee - so what more could you ask for!
