Summary
In a Freestyle BMX meets The Running Man cycle-em-up of the future, Toxic Grind takes place in the late 21st century, a period in time where BMX has been outlawed. God help us all. As punishment, those caught riding are sentenced to a public execution in the most popular show since When Eastenders Get Caught Behaving Badly. In an attempt to keep his gladiatorial game show running, host Dixon Von Blass has resorted to time travel in search of talented BMX riding guinea pigs.
You are one such guinea pig, riding for your life in the most extreme reality TV show ever devised. The only BMX game available in 2002 to feature a genuine storyline, your only route to survival in Toxic Grind is to advance through the challenges and obstacle courses Von Blass has set for you before bringing down the mighty host himself.
There are mission-based objectives to strive for within each of the past, present and future worlds, which include landmark locations such as Sherwood Forest, an ancient colosseum and even an underwater cave. To make matters worse, there's an onslaught of lightning bolts, cannons, and orbs of death on your trail. No, it's not an RPG, but you'd better get pedalling.
The option of game modes such as freestyle, arcade and multi-player give Toxic Grind a much more familiar ring, one that will no doubt invoke the curiosity of Dave Mirra devotees and Mat Hoffman fans.
Toxic Grind has great appeal as a regular extreme sports title, but it's imaginative and innovative movie-inspired story mode gives it an edge over most of its competitors.
