Summary

Owners of the first Game Boy will have fond memories of F1 Race. The game was the first Game Boy game compatible with the four-way multiplayer adaptor, which brought gaming with friends on the move forward in leaps and bounds. Just a glance at the screens for Sony’s Formula 1 on the PSP makes you realise how far gaming has come, and a 2D LCD display seems a far cry from the genuinely 3D, gorgeous racing action that fills the PSP’s wide screen.

Now up to eight players can compete head to head, with not a wire in sight, in Formula 1’s Vs. mode. The official license these days is Sony’s, and as a result, the game features all the cars and drivers from this season’s highly competitive Formula 1 Championship.

All the tracks are featured too, and if your morning journey to work doesn’t last as long as a full Grand Prix, then you can take advantage of the mini GP mode, where races last only three laps. There are seven game modes in total, including unconventional ones such as Elimination mode (last past the post each lap gets knocked out). There’s also Challenge mode, in which you are asked to keep your racing lines crisp and precise and keep as fast as possible, while staying in control of course.

The game keeps evolving even after you take it home, with downloadable content scheduled and a feature that allows you to play your favourite MP3s off your memory stick as you race. Budding Schumachers, Montoyas and Fisichellas need look no further for F1 related thrills and spills on PlayStation Portable.
