Summary

Ospedale Psichiatrico di Volterra was a psychiatric hospital opened in 1887 in Italy. 91 years later, in 1978, it was shut down after it was found to be cruelly neglecting its patients.

In The Town of Light you revisit this real world house of horrors, uncovering some of the past torments of its residents. Developer LKA has extensively researched the hospital and has taken inspiration from its very real story.

You follow the story of Renee, a patient of the institution in the early 1940s, as she visits the now derelict hospital and relives her time there.

A derelict asylum in a remote location sounds like a recipe for shadows and jump scares, but developer LKA has taken a murkier, psychological approach with The Town of Light. You follow Renee as she explores the asylum and uncovers the dark secrets of her past. In terms of gameplay, The Town of Light takes its cues from point and click adventures and the likes of Dear Esther, with exploration and dialogue trees that can take you down multiple narrative routes.

LKA has put some time into The Town of Light since its PC release, and this console version offers new story content, additional voice work, more interactive elements and a significant graphical and UI overhaul to deepen the player's immersion.

Make no mistake, this is a game that earns its 18 rating, exploring themes of physical and sexual abuse alongside the effects of memory and trauma.
