Summary

Telltale Games really opened up the world of storytelling in games with The Walking Dead, almost entirely ditching puzzles and action in favour of focusing almost completely on narrative. The studio went on to have great success with other franchises, but it also left the door open for other narrative experiments in gaming. Ken Follett's The Pillars of the Earth might not seem like an obvious choice for a videogame at first glance, but Daedalic Entertainment has delivered a mature, thoughtful, story-driven game that explores themes of love, loss, pride, humility, ambition and revenge.

The setting is the fictional town of Kingsbridge in 12th century England, a time of great poverty and war. The game follows the building of a Cathedral, a task that will ensure the wealth and security of the town's people. Players move between various characters including the likes of Philip, a monk who has just become prior of Kingsbridge abbey; Jack, the architect of the great building and siblings Aliena and Richard, left to fend for themselves after their noble father is imprisoned and murdered.

The story is told using an art style reminiscent of the adult cartoons of the '70s and '80s, giving it a slightly unusual feel. There are over 200 backgrounds to be seen, each of them hand painted, giving it a feel not dissimilar to the likes of The Banner Saga.

The original novel has sold more than 26 million copies, but this is your chance to see its world in a whole new light - whether you're an established fan or brand new to the epic tale.
