Summary

Gamers of a certain age may remember Shining Force on the SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis and all the fawning reviews it received. We can safely say that a lot has changed since then in the world of video games, but despite appearances to the contrary the gaming community's love of the Shining series is not one of them. It might have been a long, long time since we've seen the beloved RPG franchise in the West, but it's continued to be adored by JRPG fans both in Asia and by way of import elsewhere.

Shining Resonance Refrain is a remaster of Shining Resonance, previously released only in Japan on the PS3. It has, of course, been given a shiny new coat of paint for the current generation of consoles. It also includes all the DLC released for the PS3 version built right in to the base Original Mode and, brand new for this generation of consoles, Refrain Mode, which unlocks the Imperial Princess Excella and Dragonslayer Jinas as party members for a new experience. For the purist, there's also the opportunity to switch between original Japanese audio and English voiceovers at will.

With real time action combat based on Armonics, ancient weaponised instruments, it's crucial that your party members get to know each other. Through events and dates your party members get to know each other, deepening their knowledge of each other's unique abilities. Depending on the bonds that form between them, Resonance may occur and lead to a new level of support that can mean the difference between victory and defeat.

Shining Resonance Refrain is certainly a unique RPG experience, and an ideal jumping on point for new fans.
