This would be the best for gamers and developers. gamers would get better quality games and developers would get a broader fanbase and never worry about porting games.

No, this would be a worst case scenario. No hardware competition=no one to keep prices in check and no incentive to drop prices...ever, really. And why would a single platform mean better games and a broader fanbase?

I agree, look at the stagnation in the hand-held market that existed from GameBoy Colour to GBA, hardly anything changed. Then PSP comes along and within weeks we have the DS, a device Nintendo was apparently working on for years, but was happy not to let us play until after there was credible competition on the horizon.
