Summary

The Star Ocean series might not have seen quite the number of releases that the likes of Final Fantasy has, but nonetheless it's become a mainstay in the world of role-playing games.

The latest entry in the seriens, Integrity and Faithlessness, takes place after Second Story and before Till the End of Time. The action happens on the planet Faykreed, a world facing the threat of imminent invasion by an advanced race. After the intro you'll be introduced to the protagonist, Fidel, and his best friend Miki in record time. The whole game moves at breakneck pace as far as Japanese role-playing games (JRPGs) go - the main story runs at around a modest 30 hours! With that in mind, you don't have to run through the usual process of building up your character and you'll find a hero ready to go right off the blocks.

Another thing that sets this game apart from the usual JRPG fare is the seamless integration of the story into the game. Gone are the usual text boxes and cutscenes, replaced by dialogue that takes place entirely in-game.

The game features real-time combat, and players can get in close or fight at range, deploying combos to trigger distance-based skills. There's a deep cast of characters to switch between, providing plenty of variety.

All in all, STAR OCEAN: Integrity and Faithlessness is an interesting mix of tried and true JRPG tropes and new approaches that pushes the genre forward.
