C&C is one of the most popular real-time strategy brands. It has to be said that other games have blatantly ripped off the formula and the original ideas contained within. This is no bad thing, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery after all.

Tiberian Sun has been a long time coming but the wait has been worthwhile. The game focuses on the conflict between the Global Defence Initiative (GDI) and The Brotherhood of Nod. The GDI was set up to resolve conflicts that occur around the planet. Kane, a powerful leader of the Brotherhood, who was presumed dead, has made an evil comeback. It’s time to go to war again. It’s your decision which side you want to control.

Tiberian Sun is a combination of resource management, strategy and action games all in one. The objectives vary depending on the mission, but certain elements remain throughout the game. It’s likely that you will have to build a base from which you can conduct your operations. By sending out harvesters to collect ore, it’s possible to fund other areas of research or create barracks for training troops. The more technology you can amass and afford, the more options become available.

Tiberian Sun also has multi-player skirmish modes that can be played over the Internet. Playing the computer is great fun and an ideal training ground for your ideas. Things start to get interesting when you assign your troops into several different factions and launch a three-pronged attack on some unsuspecting soul who lives on the other side of the world. Up to eight people can play on-line at once, so beware of phone bills.

Tiberian Sun has very refined and satisfying gameplay. It should appeal to people who like to use their heads rather than pure brute force.
