Daikatana for the P.C. is a first person shooter that has one great story. During the 16th century the Mishima Shogunate ruled Japan with an iron fist. After years of trying to rid the land of their opposition the Ebiharas, a plan was formulated. Using the mystic arts Usagi created a sacred sword called Daikatana that enabled who ever wielded it to travel through time. The sword fell into the possession of the Ebiharas and they used it to overthrow the Mishimas. After the bloody battle the Daikatana was thrown into a volcano where it lay for a thousand years. Until one day in the future the sword is recovered and history is changed for the worst.
Daikatana is a big and very difficult game. The game designer is John Romero who has been redefining the genre since the days of Doom. The action is set over four different time periods that you travel to in search of the Daikatana. You start the game in Japan 2455 A.D., travel to Greece 1200 B.C., then to Norway 560 A.D. and finally to San Francisco in the year 2030. The time travelling element is well thought out and helps the plot along nicely. Each time period has its own weapons and enemies. In Daikatana there are 24 levels, 25 weapons and 50 different enemies that demonstrate decent artificial intelligence routines. You also get to have sidekicks that help you out in your mission. Daikatana has support for multi-player deathmatches which is one of it best features. There is plenty here to challenge and entertain, have fun and save the future.
