Summary

A Nightmare on Elm Street for the NES is loosely based on the horror films of the same name.

The game pits a group of high school students against the horribly disfigured Freddy Krueger, who hijacks their dreams and kills them one by one. In order to defeat Freddy, you must travel to Elm Street to find his bones that are scattered in various locations from the films, including: the junkyard, cemetery, Dream House, three houses and Elm Street High School. Only when his bones are destroyed will the murders stop and peace be restored.

The graphics in A Nightmare on Elm Street are fairly poor even by NES standards. Freddy Krueger looks nothing like in the movies, and the only reason you know it's actually old razor fingers is because 'FREDDY'S COMING!' is plastered across the screen. However, it must be said that the gameplay more than makes up for what the visuals lack. Once you get used to the game, the controls are straightforward enough, but can be slightly unresponsive at times. The music is limited to the title music from the films and gets extremely repetitive. The game was one of the first that used the NES Four Score accessory that allowed up to four players to play at the same time, which will obviously add to the overall longevity.
