Summary

Put on your crash helmets and prepare to be launched into the wipEout F3600 racing league of 2024. What am I talking about? Wipeout. A next generation title to be launched with a next generation machine that goes by the name of PlayStation.

Launched in 1995, the dawn of the 3D era, opportunities were rife for developers to invent some original titles. Psygnosis' Wipeout was among the first of these titles.

Set in the year 2024, Wipeout is a futuristic racer, in its simplest terms, and is somewhat akin to F-Zero on SNES, or Powerdrome on the Atari ST / Amiga. However, given a 32-bit improvement, and an investment into weapons capabilities, this game all but created itself a new genre.

Wipeout's structure is as standard as anything you would see in the present day. Progression is made by winning races, gaining points, and ultimately winning the league. There are two standard race classes, the second of which can only be accessed by winning Venom class. Rapier class is considerably faster than its predecessor, making it possible to top speeds in excess of 400mph. It's Formula 1 on air.
