Summary

Do you remember the original TOCA? If so, prepare yourself for a racing treat of epic proportions, because the best just got better. The PlayStation has seen a glut of racing sims in it’s time, some better than others. TOCA 2 Touring Cars certainly ranks with the best of them. Codemasters have made absolutely no concessions in bringing this title to the table, chock-full of goodness. Indeed, with the inclusion of a Support Car racing mode, there’s more to this game than a mere cursory glance will tell you.

The main menu in TOCA 2 Touring Cars shows immediately the myriad delights on offer. Select from one of the following race modes: Full Championship, Arcade Style Challenge, Time Trial, Single Race or the aforementioned Support Car Championship, and go burn some rubber. Play TOCA 2 Touring Cars with a Dual Shockpad and the sheer sense of realism goes up a notch or two. Choose the driver’s view, possibly through a shattered windscreen, and the action becomes even more authentic. The control system as far as gameplay is concerned is as simple as it gets. However, controlling your car in the heat of the battle, and especially when the weather takes a turn for the worst, is a totally different matter. It will take time to master the handling of your vehicle, but when you do manage to stay on track for the duration of the race, allow yourself a self- congratulatory slap on the back.

All the official cars and tracks from the 1998 British Touring Car Championship are here, plus bonus international courses and motors such as TVR and Lister. You will have to be at the top of your game to unlock these additional goodies, so if you’re in for the long haul, and you are the patient type, TOCA 2 Touring Cars should be a ‘keeper’. File under ‘T’ for terrific.
