Summary

The story of Evergrace is complex and engrossing in typical RPG style. Long ago, on a continent called Edinbury, there existed people with markings referred to as “crests.” However, there was a series of inexplicable and tragic events surrounding the people with crests. Therefore, others called the crest the “Cursed Mark,” fearing and avoiding those who bore them. The tale tells the story of two fully playable characters, Darius and Sharline, effectively making Evergrace two completely different adventures, set in the same location. The stories of the two characters are quite unique, and can be challenged simultaneously. Here, you’ll be able to swap characters at every available save point, but at no point the will the two characters intersect.

Making an unusual step away from role-playing traditions, Evergrace does not contain characters that level up. Instead, character statistics can be improved by equipping stronger weapons and armour. Such a development strategy makes Evergrace much more difficult, but at the same time makes it more interesting. Most other features remain faithful to the game genre, including the collecting of items, entry into battle and the ability to customise your game.

Evergrace, published by Ubi Soft, is one of the PlayStation 2’s first role-playing releases, and looks like it has set the genre standard for the platform.
