Summary

There are many simulations available for PC today that are often regarded as taking their subject too seriously. While this approach to games is ideal for some hardcore players, there is a significant audience who would disagree. Bringing the railway sim further into the light at the end of the Tunnel Of Furrowed Brows, stopping off at Fun and Enthralment along the way, Sierra Online has created Mini Train Deluxe.

After a brief introduction, cleverly demonstrating the tasks you are to embark on, Mini Train gives you several options before commencing your challenge. Most importantly, your difficulty setting should be chosen with caution. When you’re ready, you have the option to tackle literally hundreds of missions available from the off. However, to get to grips with the game mechanics, the game’s primary training levels come recommended. Essentially, your task on each level is to pick up varying types of cargo trains, pick up goods and drop them off at a specified location. To do this, you must learn how to control railway junctions, train speeds, and even turntables. While the task is initially reasonably simple, with just a couple of variables to consider, later stages will contain complex junctions, vast playing environments, and even multiple numbers of trains. Managing a whole system is something that requires patience, speed of thought and concentration.

The overall challenge of Mini Train Deluxe is an engrossing one that inflicts the ‘just one more go’ factor upon the player. Missing out on a successful mission is often frustrating, and the desire to persist is always there, making the game as a whole an addictive experience.
