Summary

It seems there is a new genre emerging within the video games industry. I’m not going to try and christen this new-ish breed of games, but just consider that the likes of Hooligans has provoked minor outrage in some quarters for its depiction of, ahem, ‘anti-social behaviour’. Xplorys have taken advantage of this newly spawned genre and produced a number of games, among which is Amateur League Golf.

This game is more of an ‘extreme simulator’ in some respects, allowing you to perform some extremely bad-tempered actions. If you’re having a bad round, you can hit your caddy over the head with a club, but if you beat him excessively, he’ll be unable to offer his sound advice. If your ball goes out of bounds, the caddy must risk his life, avoiding alligators and gangsters to get the ball back.

On the game side of things, courses are cunning, featuring many bunkers, rivers and windy courses. The game is played in full 3D, in which you can challenge up to three of your friends in a match, skins or stroke game. But the real challenge of the game comes when tackling Amateur League Golf’s Composure Response System. If you can’t handle the pressure of a game of golf and you perform badly, the game will get harder. It can be incredibly frustrating to play, but that’s only because of the true-to-life aspect of the game. But relieving your violent tendencies is equally rewarding.

While not the most accurate golf game in the world, it does employ a novel method of gameplay that ultimately makes it an enjoyable game.
