Summary

Puzzle games usually assume one of two types. Some games allow gamers take as much time as is needed, while others force a time restriction upon the player, possibly turning the game into a frenzy of fingers and thumbs as the clock ticks down. Fortress on Game Boy Advance from THQ falls into the latter category.

The primary objective of Fortress is simple. Build a structure as tall and as quickly as possible that is capable of destroying the opposition’s tower. True, the basics of the game are simple, but it is these attributes that make them such a challenge. Forcing a sense of urgency upon the player, the enemy’s tower is constructed remarkably quickly. Once the tower is ready, players can feel free to hurl projectile weapons such as cannons and arrows. The first player to destroy the opposing tower wins.

Although the computer offers a stiff challenge, it can quickly get a little predictable. To increase the challenge further and expand on the relatively short life of the main game, players are able to have a go at the multi-player game via a link cable.

Graphically, Fortress is more than adequate. Four unique environments (Prehistoric, Medieval, Pirate and Space), well animated characters and some miniature special effects all help to immerse the player into a genuinely addictive game.
