Summary

Action. The game that injected new life into the tired shooting genre was Namco’s arcade hit Time Crisis. A revolutionary new style of play was introduced in the form of ducking and shooting. For the first time in a light-gun game, you could control whether you were in the thick of action or hiding behind the scenery. This adds a tactical aspect to the action: ducking and diving avoids enemy fire, but wastes time. And in a game where time is crucial, an interesting dilemma arises.

But Time Crisis is not going to be the first gun game on the PlayStation 2, that honour is being reserved for Time Crisis 2. And to compliment the release of Time Crisis 2, Namco are also launching the Guncon 2 controller. Now this is what the PS2 needs. The new Guncon features a built-in d-pad and improved button positioning, all the better for Time Crisis 2.

The arcade version of Time Crisis 2 was a two cabinet link-up multi-player game, where two-players could play simultaneously. This option is also being included in the home version thanks to the iLink functionality of the PS2. It might be elaborate, but this is like having an expensive arcade set-up at home for a fraction of the cost. Alternatively, a split-screen option is available to simulate the experience.

The two-player mode is easily one of the best features. It is possible to cover each others' backs because you both see the same scene from slighty different angles. A good example is when you corner a group of baddies in an alleyway. You stand at either end and keep them pinned down with your crossfire. Just be careful not to shoot your partner.

With delicious visuals and addictive multi-player gameplay, Time Crisis 2 stands out as a must-have title for the PlayStation 2.
