Summary

Okay, we’re not as good at cricket as we’d all like to think. Loss after loss with the occasional win, England has always struggled against continental opponents. But now potential cricketers can brush up on their knowledge and test their game theories with Empire’s latest virtual update, International Cricket Captain 2002.

A tactical game of skill, wits and management, ICC 2002 gives you, the player, the opportunity to command any of the world’s Test-playing nations or county teams. You are the manager, charged with buying and selling players, devising effective match strategies, and even preparing the playing pitch. It’s a lot of responsibility, and any clear-cut mistakes could deal a serious blow to your career. Conversely, the glory of a successful match or season is entirely yours for the taking.

Welcome additions to this latest update include the latest World Cup 2003 and Ashes scenarios. On screen, there isn’t really much to look at other than a series of statistics, scores and playing formations and strategies, but this is irrelevant. ICC 2002 is not about giving players an ample supply of eye candy, it’s about making them think. It’s certainly good for the brain.

Voice over commentary from Jonathan Agnew, a complete list of licensed names and a library of historical test series replays immerses the player in a great strategy game. It’s one for the hardcore cricket fan, but it’s well worth a shot.
