Summary

Now, we all love a good Star Trek game. And it can hardly be said that there's ever been a shortage of them - both games and Star Trek have long been pastimes of the true geeks within us, so it's only natural that they have a strong association with each other. Thing is, of the myriad Star Trek titles to be released, not many of them were ever immediately accessible to the more casual-gaming, non-Trekkies amongst us. So the release of Star Trek: Elite Force 2 certainly comes as great news. It's a fairly straightforward first-person shooter, with an emphasis on action and combat, and you don't need to be fluent in Klingon or own the complete musical works of William Shatner to enjoy it.

The game's story runs as such: after the triumphant return of Captain Janeway and crew to the alpha quadrant, the Hazard Team is assigned its deadliest mission yet - duty on board the Federation's renowned flagship, the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701-E. As the leader of Starfleet's latest rapid response force, players soon encounter a relentless onslaught of enemies, including Star Trek staples such as the Borg and Romulans, as well as several never before seen alien species.

Improving on the original Elite Force, number two features a more open level design than traditional shooters by offering different solution paths to several of the game's mission objectives. There are 11 missions in total, set across a wealth of strange new worlds. In the true spirit of Starfleet and exploration, the adventure transports the player to a series of increasingly exotic outdoor locations, such as expansive alien landscapes and the void of space.

As no FPS is complete without an expansive weapons set, EF2 doesn't disappoint, offering a variety of ranged weapons that include improved phasers, an enhanced I-Mod and new additions like Romulan disrupters and a Tetryon gatling gun. Also, melee weapons such as the Klingon Bat'Leth make their mark in the game's multiplayer mode, and a fully functional Tricorder is available for scanning and interacting with environments.

To expand more on the multiplayer side of things, a full LAN/Internet frag fest returns, in much the same way as with the original, this time introducing new features and equipment taken from the single-player adventure. Returning multiplayer modes include Holomatch, Team Holomatch and Capture the Flag.
