Summary

Often overshadowed by the myriad Street Fighter and King of Fighters games, Sammy's entrance in to the 2D fighting genre has enjoyed more of a cult success. The original Playstation version was well received, leading to subsequent releases of Guilty Gear X for the arcade, PS2 and Dreamcast. Maintaining the quality character animations and fluid gameplay that have so far characterised the game, developer ARC's latest effort delivers GGX in portable format, for your Game Boy Advance.

Set in the 22nd Century, the plot revolves around a new breed of biological weapons called 'Gears'. These weapons, programmed to blindly obey the orders given by their commander, were enlisted by a rebel fighter called Justice to declare war on the human race. To oppose this, an organisation by the name of the Sacred Order of Holy Knights was formed and an international tournament was set up to single out those worthy of a place in the Order (will such stories ever cease to amaze?).

Sticking closely to the original formula, GGX delivers involving fighting tactics and fast paced action, which makes for an impressive GBA debut for the 14 characters. Featuring a variety of different modes, such as the usual Arcade and Versus modes, the game also plays host to 3 on 3 mode and Tug mode, which are GBA exclusives, as well as the popular Survival mode that appeared in the Dreamcast version. A handy training mode is also available, giving players the chance to practice basic controls and techniques.

All in all, this is a faithful conversion of the popular fighter which translates really well to Nintendo's handheld.
