It's becoming a bit crowded up there on the Rally Sim shelf of your average games retailer. Like buses, you wait ages for one and then a whole load of them come at once. Well, bus stop rush hour is upon us as the barrage of Rally games is about to fight for a place in your DVD rack. One such title is Pro Rally from Ubi Soft.
Claiming to have been redesigned to take full advantage of the GameCube's specifications, Pro Rally aims to provide a maximum of immediate fun in exceptional environments. Nice to hear, considering the current fashion for knocking out lazy ports for the platform. The game therefore offers optimised graphics and effects alongside an immersive game and a plethora of tracks and features.
A total of 48 tracks feature in the game, covering an impressive 175 kilometres of road. That's 125 miles to us Brits. As far as cars are concerned, we're looking at 20 licensed vehicles, including most of the rally winning vehicles of the 1990's. The usual assortment of varying weather conditions and different track terrains are also to be found in there, ensuring Pro Rally has all its bases covered with regard to offerings.
The game itself features six different modes. As expected, Championship is the focal point of the proceedings, entering the player into a real-life Rally Championship as it tours the globe. Also on offer are the more accessible Arcade and Trophy modes, as well as a Driving School mode and a Multiplayer Versus option.
Aesthetically speaking, Pro Rally comes with a host of graphical showing-off. Real-time lighting, volumetric shadows and multi-texturing feature throughout, all maintained at 60 frames per second, whilst the high detail level boasts such figures as 4000 trees rendered on a single track.
There's a great deal of competition within the Rally sim genre at the moment and in the immediate future. Pro Rally's technical specs alone should ensure that it fares well.
