Summary
In what appears to be an attempt to cater for the tastes of all types of snowboarding game fan, this latest on-piste offering from Konami fuses elements of two distinct gameplay styles, offering players choices of straight competitive races and challenges, as well as a series of missions. The mission-based aspect is designed to put players' accumulated skills and mastered moves to use within a series of objective-based stages, thus adding a bit more depth to the usual proceedings.
Set across a variety of exotic locations, each of the missions sees players putting to use their ever-increasing roster of tricks and stunts in order to attain a series of items or objectives. Chases, running battles and manoeuvring through unlikely areas such as Chinatown all feature in the game, adding a rather novel spin to what had previously seemed like an exhausted genre.
For the snowboarding purists amongst you, Evolution Snowboarding also comes complete with quite a comprehensive and feature-packed competition element. 10 real riders - including 2002 Winter Olympics silver medallist Danny Klass - have been faithfully recreated in the game, adding their signature moves and expertise to enhance the game's realistic interpretation of pelting down the slopes.
The game further goes to enhance this level of detail by also offering the best boarders the chance to upgrade their kit and boards from the very best ranges the sport has to offer. As players shred up the slopes and gain recognition and prize money for their endeavours, the cash can be exchanged for top-of-the-line boards and gear, making the tricks and stunts needed for the bigger prizes even easier to effect.
On the whole, Evolution Snowboarding doesn't offer anything drastically new or original, but it's combination of two different gameplay elements means that it has plenty to offer in terms of replay value and that it's not just another extreme sports clone.
