Summary
For each Lord of the Rings film released on the big screen, there has been some kind of video game equivalent. Offerings from both Electronic Arts and Vivendi have followed the events of the Tolkien classic closely in a series of solid 3D adventures. But now there’s a real-time strategy game based upon the events of Middle-earth in which your quest to destroy the One Ring continues.
The first true RTS game in the franchise, War of the Ring gives eager beavers the opportunity to partake in two single player story-led campaigns. They can either fight to free the people of Middle-earth as a group of would-be heroes, or fight for the cause of evil under the rule of the diabolical Sauron.
As an RTS experience, War of the Ring doesn’t offer anything new to the genre, but as a game, it plays well. It comes with an intuitive interface, making it easy to command and lead large groups of fighters into battle. There are a variety of scenarios available to the player, and more often than not, gamers will be pitted against massive enemy armies. The single player game aside, War of the Ring also caters for an 8-way multi-player frenzy over the net.
Fantasy locales are typical of the Middle-earth world, and take players to infamous locations such as Helm’s Deep. And to make the game world more immersive and believable, the developer has included some spectacular and unpredictable weather effects including wind and rain. War of the Ring is a welcome addition to the virtual Lord of the Rings series.
