Summary
A long-running series for PC, Fallout was previously best known for its gory nature, post-apocalyptic world and strong elements of strategy. That trend continued for several outings, bringing with it some intense gameplay, and now the series is destined for the home console market in the form of Brotherhood of Steel on PS2.
In what is a refined Fallout adventure, this latest offering pits players in a gritty and ever-so-slightly humorous world as a member of the Brotherhood of Steel - a good faction that spends it waking hours maintaining a fragile peace in the post-apocalyptic Fallout world. But you know post-apocalyptic life - it's no bed of roses, and battling myriad raiders, mutants and radioactive nightmares are daily chores in your mission to bring the scattered remnants of the human race back together.
And so your bitter hack 'n' slash adventure begins. A game that breaks the bonds of the hardcore RTS game in favour of full-on action, players will find themselves fighting for survival in numerous hostile locations, armed with an arsenal of futuristic and explosive weapons. There are two fully customisable players to get to grips with, each with their own strengths and attributes. As players progress, enemies become smarter and more aggressive, and the challenge as a whole becomes much more difficult. Thankfully, characters and their abilities can develop too, helping to stabilise a tricky learning curve.
Brotherhood of Steel marks a change in direction for the Fallout series, and as the first Fallout console offering, we reckon this is a good thing. BOS is a fair old start to what'll no doubt be the first of many console games in this series.
