Summary

Another bizarre Nickelodeon phenomenon, SpongeBob Squarepants is a massively popular cartoon featuring a sea sponge and his quirky friends. The series soon came to video games, and new for 2003 is SpongeBob’s second GameCube outing in Battle for Bikini Bottom.

The evil Plankton has set in motion yet another diabolical plot to take over the world, and the fate of Bikini Bottom lies in the unlikely hands of SpongeBob himself, along with two of his friends, Patrick Star and Sandy Cheeks.

It may sound like a far-fetched story, even for a cartoon, but to those familiar with the TV series, it’s just a typical SpongeBob adventure, and a good one at that. In what is essentially a 3D platform adventure with regards to gameplay, Bikini Bottom pits players in 16 massive 3D locales in which they must overcome numerous obstacles, jump from platform to platform and defeat any lurking enemies. But no 3D adventure would be complete without a set of unique hero abilities. This time players are armed with the ability to perform crazy manoeuvres such as Tongue Boarding and Underwear Bungee Jumping, and can even make use of Lasso Copters and Cruise Bubbles.

Most of your abilities serve as a means to travel the huge game world, but Bikini Bottom also plays host to myriad bonus levels, secret rewards and hidden items. To find them all will take time, but it’s worth the effort and gives THQ’s latest game a greater sense of longevity.

Complete with cartoon visuals, a few Matrix-style special effects, and cameo appearances from the TV show, Bikini Bottom is a game kids will love.
