Summary

The ever-popular 3D beat-em-up and the Mech-based combat adventure are two genres that rarely meet in the middle. The former is typically involved with 1-on-1 fighting, whilst the latter is more strategic, focusing on war-like conflicts. However, GMX’s One Must Fall: Battlegrounds helps bring the two together in the best way possible by offering an online multi-player beat-em-up in which players take command of giant Mech fighting machines.

The objective of this fantasy combat game is purely dependent on how you approach the game - there are two main stances. Playing online with up to 15 other Mech opponents, players can either gather in teams and battle as a group, or play for themselves in an all out brawl. Regardless, your challenge will be to survive each battle by mastering the art of combat and defence through a neural interface. There are several basic beat-em-up moves to get to grips with, as well as an arsenal of weapons such as flamethrowers and fireballs. And should your Mech be destroyed by such weapons, fear not, because a group of wealthy sponsors are at hand to build you another fighting machine.

Visually speaking, One Must Fall is among the PC platform’s better looking titles, and comes complete with a variety of special effects, some of which are reminiscent of a fantasy RPG. It’s a solid game that, with the aid of a third-party controller, becomes more skilful and more fun. Overall, it’s a pretty good effort from developer Diversions.
