Summary

Attention PC owners! Here’s something a little bit different for those of you getting bored of team based FPS and fantasy MMORPG games. Aurora Watching is the work of Polish developers Metropolis, and sits firmly in the Stealth-em-up genre that is usually the preserve of lowly consoles. Published in the UK by Enlight, the game tells the story of the further adventures of Cole Sullivan, code named White Fox.

The sharp eyed among you will notice that White Fox also starred in last year’s Gorky Zero, another stealth game, and itself a prequel to the tactical RPG Odium. The ex-NATO commando has spent the last two years in vodka-induced stupor, but some government agents pick him off the floor to tell him that his nemesis, the fiendish Dr. Jacek Parecki, is up to his old tricks again. Parecki is the most brilliant geneticist on the planet, but also one of the most twisted and evil humans ever. With admirably Bond villainesque ambition, the nefarious Parecki has already sunk a submarine and set to work creating an army of zombies in his secret base, located beneath an enormous iceberg in the Arctic Barents Sea.

With no time to get over his monumental hangover, White Fox must step to the no good scientist without delay and put a stop to his unnatural meddlings. The gameplay is very much in the style of Hideo Kojima’s genre defining Metal Gear Solid, and you can play in either of two camera angles: one is an overhead ‘tactical’ view which is sure to remind you of Snake, the other an equally traditional over the shoulder perspective for looks into the distance for long distance shots and reconnaissance. Equipped with a silenced pistol, security system hacking laptop and plenty of bandages, you’ll need to fight and sneak your way through the doctor’s army of henchmen and zombie slaves. The game also has a few special stages up its sleeves, including a snowmobile section.

With Renderwared graphics and animation that rival the efforts of longer established houses, Aurora Watching is testament to the burgeoning power of Eastern Europe software developers. Definitely worth a look.
