Summary
Much has been made of Activision and Neversoft’s recent release of Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland. You’ve doubtless experienced the marketing campaign on the goggle box yourselves, and are well aware of the game’s unique selling point: a large, seamless world to explore, skate through and grind on, and not a loading screen in sight.
Such technology, achieved by streaming textures from the disc, is hardly anything new, but it’s still true that the Tony Hawk series has come a long way since the early PlayStation days. For many fans, perhaps too long a way, with missions and collecting things sometimes more the focus than going for that enormous, record-breaking trick combo.
So it’s a good thing that the button pressing purity of the original games still gets its torch carried proudly on the GBA. Vicarious Visions continue their mission, namely to present every version of a Tony Hawk game in the time-honoured isometric form on the GBA.
Cruise round new environments, performing flip tricks, manuals, grinds and all manner of maple-board mounted acrobatics, including the new tricks included in American Wasteland – like Natas Spins and Bert Slides. Indeed, there are 200 tricks to master, all accompanied by authentic sliding and grinding sound effects pumped out of the GBA’s proficient sound system.
Cruise your punk 80s neighbourhood, as you set about helping the great T. Hawk himself – as well as hot skate girl Mindy – rebuild a disused warehouse so that it can become the venue for local skate kids to vent their radical urges. Improve your score by fulfilling the whims of people stood on the corner, whether it be performing strings of tricks or nailing a particularly challenging grind.
Another edition in the always delivering Tony Hawk series on GBA, this time around you get larger environments and a graphical style that apes the cell shaded look of American Sk8land’s big brother on DS. Awesome.
