Summary
Winter 2006/2007, and Nintendo is doing all sorts of interesting things with Tennis. Wii Sports: Tennis has effectively put the racquet right in your hand. Now Rafa Nadal Tennis on the DS from Codemasters is making use of the hand-held's innovative touch screen system to give players more precision and control than ever.
If you don't follow tennis, you might not know that Rafa Nadal is the world number two in the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings at the time of the game's release. That means, all things considered, that he's rather good. Players can either hit the courts as Nadal, or create a new character, choosing their looks and attributes.
The game's Tennis School, a full tutorial mode, teaches gamers how to move their player around the court using the Nintendo DS stylus. Then - by sweeping the stylus across the touch screen - control serves, lobs, drop shots and power shots amongst others.
There are five key areas of your game to develop within your profile: serve, forehand, backhand, smash and speed. With a new player, these will start at zero. They can then be improved as matches are won and credits are earned. A win might also yield prize money which can be spent on equipment (or hiring out a doubles partner if life on the court's getting a bit lonely).
Players will be able to rise through the ranks in the game's career mode. There are 20 tournaments spread across 17 international locations which will give players the opportunity to develop their game and strive towards the coveted top spot.
Players will also be able to tackle their friends in matches played across the DS's wireless connection. You'll be able to play up to three other gamers in doubles matches from a single copy of the game. If each player has a copy of the game, however, the multi-card mode will offer up more choices in terms of the court you play on and the players you use.
So if you fancy a bit of summer sports fun but can't quite face heading down to the local sports centre, this is your game.
