Summary

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon is a tactical role-playing game for Nintendo's DS handheld. As with many established Japanese game series, the history is complicated, but basically this is the second remake of the first game from the series. The important part is that this is the very first Fire Emblem game for the DS. The game originally came out on the NES in 1990, and it features Marth, who later went on to fame in Super Smash Brothers. As you can imagine, this version has been considerably enhanced to make use of the touch screen interface (though you can use the buttons and D-pad of you prefer), dual screen display and online capabilities of the DS. The DS version of the game has also been given new features and additional character classes for you to play.

Fire Emblem is a turn-based tactical game, which means it combines elements of RPGs with those of turn-based strategy games. If this is all new to you, don't worry, the game includes a tutorial section to teach you the basics of turn-based strategy gaming. The action takes place over 25 chapters, but you can save between each of them. On the DS, you see the game map on the lower screen, with character stats or fight animations on the top screen.

Fans of the series will be pleased to see the DS's online capabilities put to good use. For the first time in a Fire Emblem game, players can compete online via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and talk using the built-in DS microphone. In these online battles, you can use up to five characters from the single player campaign, and you can even "borrow" characters from other players. Playing against a time and turn limit, you must defeat the enemy or capture the flag of their central castle.
