If you're a fan of strategy role playing games the DS has treated you well with offerings such as Final Fantasy Tactics A2, Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, and Disgaea. Prepare to have your collection of titles further bolstered with the release of the Valkyrie Profile series' first game to hit Nintendo's handheld - Covenant of the Plume. It's a decidedly more mature affair than the likes of Final Fantasy Tactics A2, featuring a dark story of revenge and hatred.
The game stars Wylfred. Wylfred is decidedly not keen on the Valkyries, especially when it comes to Lenneth Valkyrie. They've got a history, see. Back when Wylfred was ten, Lenneth Valkyrie used his father as an Einherjar. To seek revenge, Wylfred accepted power from Hel, Queen of Niflheim. While that's going on, however, the two princes of Artolia are going at it for the throne, with the kingdom's neighbours waiting in the wings to take advantage. It's all set to get messy, but the story has multiple endings that will change, depending on how you play.
Covenant of the Plume is really all about the team-ups, however. Its new mutual assistance system enables allies to jump into the fray at any moment, allowing for multi-pronged attacks.
Because the game is all about revenge, it's possible to deal out more pain than the enemy has hit points. This is called, appropriately, Overkill, and produces 'sin points'. Get enough and you'll be rewarded with new items: fail, and you'll be faced with an even bigger enemy next time.
