Summary

It's great to see Blue Dragon get some more love. It's a Japanese RPG series that contains some wonderful art direction and imagery, and the story would please any anime fan worth their salt. Although it started life as an Xbox 360 title in 2007 by creator Hironobu Sakaguchi (of Final Fantasy fame), the story seems to have found a more comfortable home on the Nintendo DS.

Using the handheld's touch screen, players can easily navigate battle options and change shadows in order to tactically overcome challenges and bosses. Assuming the role of series' lead, Shu, you also have an opportunity to customise the character's appearance and style as you see fit (even gender). The stylus is put to full use here, with clothing, hairstyles and facial options adding as depth to the character creation as there is in the game's story.

The story itself involves the activity of a new series of enemies that want to rise to power. Coincidentally, these bad guys seem to bear some resemblance to Nene, the adversary that players had to defeat in the first Blue Dragon game. This mystery leads Shu and his pack of friends to a dangerous quest to find out what's going on, and reclaim the lost shadows that have been used to strike terror into the world.
