Summary
Nippon Ichi Software – the company behind such cult titles as Disgaea: Hour of Darkness and Soul Nomad and the World Eaters – has teamed up with Hitmaker (Dino Crisis, Blade Dancer: Lineage of Light) and publisher Tecmo to bring a genuine Japanese RPG (JRG) to the PS3 in Europe.
Those familiar with the genre will revel in the brain and strategy-taxing turn-based action combat that is also a major part of this questing adventure.
The key here, however, is that unlike many RPGs, Last Rebellion is free-roaming. This means that the player has the opportunity to really explore the game world of Junovald. To do this, the player takes the role of of a character called Nine Asfel. However, it's not just a single-character game. The player also takes up the role of a female protagonist, Aisha Romandine.
The trick here is to choose which of the characters is best suited to the puzzle solving, combat and general exploration.
Nine is of the Blade race. His speciality is physical attacks. In short, he's a warrior. Aisha, on the other hand, is a Sealer. She uses magic spells to attack and destroy the souls of her enemies.
The combat system, while turn-based, features the ability to target specific body parts (think Fallout 3). However, rather than simply resulting in damage points, hits to the legs will slow down a foe, hits to the arms will weaken their attacks. Combing clever combat choices with the strengths of Aisha's magic or Nine's force provides for an intriguing and enjoyable challenge to a gamer.
