Summary

There are many video games that claim to have the player explore a 'shadowy' world or to overcome 'shady' opponents and evil villains. But Hudson Soft's description of A Shadow's Tale is incredibly accurate, given that you actually do control a boy's shadow as he explores a world that changes on the movement of the sun.

Mixing exploration, puzzle-solving and combat together, this adventure platforming game sports a colourful, sun-kissed world full of green meadows and ancient temples. But as a shadow, you won't be focusing on any of that as your eyes remain focused on the shapes cast on the floor. Your exploration is dictated by not only the rotation of the sun, but other factors too – for instance, you must always have a shadow foothold, and if you wander into total darkness or strong sunlight you'll disappear, never to return.

To progress to the next stage, the shadow must collect various key items along his journey, which adds an element of mystery and intrigue to the already strange circumstances of the main character. A winged sylph known as a 'Spangle' assists your adventure by having the power to manipulate objects in the physical world. With all of these gameplay mechanics combined, A Shadow's Tale becomes a truly interesting experience.
