Summary

Freedom Wars sounds, at first listen, like exactly the kind of game name developers and publishers are wont to come up with to make it sound as though their action game has high stakes. Sony Japan Studio, Shift and Dimps really mean it with this one, though.

In a future where the Earth is polluted to the point of being unlivable, resources are scarce and many are housed in brutal new penal colonies in order to survive. As someone born into one of these colonies, you're left with no good choices - only bad risks. The one way to earn your freedom is to fight for it, taking on dangerous missions. Working together with up to four other players to rescue civilians holding vital knowledge of rival panopticons, you might just be able to reduce your sentence and win your freedom.

The game is an action RPG, blending together fighting mechanics, shoot-'em-up action and strategy. This means, of course, that you can customise your character's appearance, class and weapons using Entitlement Points earned fighting for your panopticon.

You can team up with three other players to represent your city, playing either in pure co-op or against another team of four.

Freedom Wars might be set in the future, but with its focus on freedom and surveillance, it's most certainly a game for today.
