For years Pokemon fans have trained their pokemon, sent them off into battle and then watched them at something of a remove as the action plays out through turn-based gameplay mechanisms. With Pokken Tournament, that all changes and the action gets a lot more visceral. If playing as Pikachu, dressed as a luchador, battling it out against other Pokemon on the deck of a ship hosting a huge Magikarp festival is the gaming experience you've always hankered for, you're in for a treat!

So, yes, Pokken Tournament is unconventional. In fact, it's a blending of Pokemon with another giant of the gaming world - Tekken. Developed by the studio behind Tekken, Bandai Namco, it's a fast and wild beat-'em-up. The blending of francises is fairly commonplace these days, but that's still a pretty leftfield combination.

The game comes with a range of modes. Single Battles set players against the CPU, with a range of difficulty options on offer. In local multiplayer, two friends can go head to head. With one player using the gamepad and the other using either the Wii Remote/Classic Controller and Nunchuk or Pro Controller alongside the main screen, both will get their own view of the action. Online mode offers either quickfire Friendly Matches or, for the more competitive, Rank Matches in which players are awarded points for each victory to see how they stack up!

Pokkén Tournament DX includes all the content from the Wii U and arcade editions, as well as some brand new features for the Switch including, of course, the option to take it on the road!

Pokken Tournament is unconventional to say the least, and likely to be a hit with fans for that exact reason.
