Summary

The League of Free Worlds can no longer bear the oppression of the mighty Empire. The worm has truly turned and, as one of the League's best pilots, you're at the spearhead of their offensive, in this mission based 3D space shoot 'em up.

Led by The Father, it is up to you to make each successive mission a victory at the helm of a variety of fighter craft. Your missions progress from simple escort duties through to disabling Imperial Navy ships and towing them to allied cruisers. Failure to complete a mission isn't necessarily the end, but the ramifications of your inability to, say, destroy a communications ship could mean the enemy are now aware of your location and will anticipate your next move. This cause-and-effect game style leads to a non-linear structure, which greatly adds to the title's lasting appeal.

Colony Wars not only looks fantastic, it plays great too. Manoeuvering your fighter couldn't be easier, though sometimes you'll be a little dizzy and disorientated after a furious dogfight. The missions can get a little repetitive and can occasionally be over before you know what is really happening. Fortunately there are far more good missions than bad, and the database of historical and background information for each system, planet and moon really helps to immerse you in the gradually unfolding narrative.
