Summary

No longer the sport of choice for elderly ladies on a sabbatical from the Saturday round of Bingo, contemporary wrestling is big business. Glitzy, over the top and pantomime-like are a few adjectives that spring to mind. The World Wrestling Championship Superstars are a motley bunch of luridly clad, muscle bound meatheads with showbiz monikers like Randy Savage. Nothing randy about this game, but there is a fair amount of savagery on show.

Here's what you can expect to see from your ringside seat. Preceding each bout, you will witness the bombast of these superstars' grandstanding entrances, talked up to great effect by the in-game commentators. These guys, with their OTT superlatives and raised voices, are just as extravagant with their comments as the wrestlers are with their gestures and taunts. Once in the ring, and once you have figured out which lovable character you’re controlling (they all look pretty much the same), getting to grips with their actions and movements seems to take an eternity. There are hundreds of moves to master in WCW Mayhem, just to make sure you keep returning to the ring. Even the smallest of wrestlers (you can even create your own), moves initially like a slug. With a lot of practice you’ll have your man moving around like a slug in a bit of a hurry. It all adds up to a lot of fun, especially when there are more than two wrestlers involved, and whether it’s inside or outside the ring.

WCW Mayhem is just one of a whole bunch of wrestling games available for the PSX, but because it’s so reasonably priced and such a pleasure to grapple with, it comes out on top.
