Summary

Head Shot, Double Kill, Killing Spree. Welcome to the future of gladiator combat in Unreal Tournament for the PC. Many people agree that first-person shooters make for the best action orientated multi-player games, we would have to concur. There is nothing quite like the feeling of reaching the frag (kill) limit first when someone just needs just one more kill as well. Unreal Tournament is one of the best shooting games to surface in the history of the genre.

The gameplay of Unreal Tournament is split into four main categories. Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Domination and Challenge. Deathmatch is a straight forward kill or be killed scenario where it’s the first player to reach the limit who wins. Capture the Flag is where you must venture into the other teams base and steal there precious flag, if you make it back to your base alive and you flag is still there, you score a point. Capture the flag is heavily team based where communication is of vital importance, you must balance your tactics between scouting and defending.

Domination is another team based rule variation where your team has to be the first to reach a set points level. In Domination there are three icons which will award you points if you turn them to your colour. If two or more of the icons are your colour you will gain a higher percentage of the point total and that will ensure your victory. Domination is a great game because you are informed of which icon has been changed and whereabouts on the level it is. You then make your way there as fast as possible and if you win the showdown, you can retake it. The Challenge mode are extremely hard one on one matches with the computer. You will need full health, armour, a few decent weapons and good aiming to stand a chance in the challenge mode.

The control method in Unreal Tournament is identical to Quake, and once you get used to it, you realise that it is the best way of controlling your character in games like this. You can run and look, separately, in any direction at once, and no other control method can match the speed and accuracy of a mouse, keyboard set-up.

The weapons in Unreal Tournament deserve a mention because of the originality and dual functionality. Each weapon has two modes of fie and some weapons can even be charged up. The rocket launcher, for example, doubles as a grenade launcher and up to six rockets/grenades can be loaded into the chamber simultaneously. If you want to clear a densely populated room, six rockets will do nicely. The blood splatter will be expensive to remove off your armour of course.

Unreal Tournament offers so many diverse, quality assured, single and multi-player gaming experiences that we cannot help ourselves when it comes to recommending it.
