Summary

The popularity of the Flintstones has been a rollercoaster affair. After a number of animated series, the Flintstones Movie sent the franchise into Hollywood hell. Nevertheless, the modern stone-age family has bounced back with a series of video games released across many platforms. New for PlayStation 2 is Viva Rock Vegas; a ‘race and chase’ adventure featuring all of your favourite primitive characters.

Fred knows only one way to Wilma’s heart; jewellery. On a mission to please the one he supposedly loves, Fred and the rest of the gang are about to embark upon a quest to win the Boulderball diamond ring by winning the illegal Boulderball contest in Rock Vegas (that’s Las Vegas to me and you).

As a racing game, Viva Rock Vegas is by no means a simulator, and makes a return to the old school methods of early video games. Handling is simple; you don’t have to worry about damage or any other complex race conditions, giving Rock Vegas a fresh and comedic feel. There are twelve courses to race on, all of which have multiple routes, that take place across several classic locations, such as Bedrock and of course, Rock Vegas. Weapons are a vital asset to Rock Vegas, making the outcome of a race very unpredictable and exciting. But the game’s multi-player facility will prove the most valuable asset to the game. For multi-tap owners, a four-player split-screen mode is exceptional fun.

Viva Rock Vegas takes a welcome step back to simple tactics and intuitive gameplay. It’s a pleasure.
