Summary

Lacking a wrestling game of its own, Nintendo’s GameCube hasn’t been able to capture the attention of fans of the sport... until now. Thanks to Acclaim, Legends of Wrestling is coming to GameCube. Not a bad start to GameCube’s wrestle-em-up library.

Legends of Wrestling comprises only the greatest wrestlers known to the square ring. Many familiar and playable characters make their appearance within minutes of switching the console on. Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, Jimmy Snuka, Jerry Lawler and King Kong Bundy are just a few of them.

Legends of Wrestling contains some stunning and realistic environments, complete with light-sourcing, a massive crowd and of course, some well rendered but strangely dolly-like wrestlers. We don’t know why, but they look plastic, although not to the extent of the Xbox version.

Participating in an actual match, players must simply hit the right buttons, but with a good sense of timing. As with most wrestling games, smacking the control pad at random usually leads straight to the game over screen. But with a little precision, you can knock out some lengthy and highly damaging combos.

Players can also create a legend of their own if they’re not happy the abundance of world class wrestlers already available.

Game modes include Ladder, Career and Tag-team, as well as the usual quick match and tournament options. There’s plenty to be getting on with as a single player, but adding a second player and controller offers so much more in the way of enjoyment and longevity.

An authentic wrestling atmosphere, character introductions and commentary and analysis from Jimmy Hart and Lou Albano helps maintain a fun, immersive playing environment that will keep players entertained for a long time.
