Summary
Stoked attempts to bring the real-life thrill of backcountry freeride snowboarding to the Xbox 360. Most previous snowboarding games on all platforms have tried to corral the action into a boardercross style race, a halfpipe competition or a boardpark environment. But for most real snowboarders, the genuine snowboarding experience is that of exploring a new mountain, and freeriding open terrain.
Stoked opens up every inch of five huge mountains to riders. You can explore them at your leisure, blazing new trails or riding old favourites. There are over 45 square miles of terrain on each peak, all of them realistically modelled after a real-world mountain. So you can use the game to get familiar with slopes you may some day ride. But unlike your annual fortnight in La Plagne, in Stoked, you can explore the whole hill, with helicopter drops opening up slopes you'd have to plod uphill with your board strapped to your back to reach in real life.
A game has to have an objective, however, and like any other board-sport game, the objective of Stoked is to get kudos and rise through the ranks of germs to become a respected elite rider. As you rise through the ranks, other riders will begin to emulate your style, both the way you ride, and the way you dress.
Dynamic weather conditions and time of day modelling change the conditions on each of the hills, just like in real-life riding. Snow drifts change the character of the runs, closing off some areas, and opening up others via new trickable obstacles.
Bring a friend along for the ride: Stoked enables you to create challenges to ride co-operatively or competitively. Or you can simply call the shots, and take them too: tell your riding parent what stunt to pull and capture them on virtual camera as they do. You can take the multi-player action online in Xbox Live, and compete with other players to build your fame.
All of this is to a somewhat eclectic soundtrack of indie rock, rap and reggae that will have something to appeal to almost everyone.
Stoked has attracted the attention, and the endorsement, of over 30 respected industry sponsors, from big boys like Burton, Billabong, Dakine and Oakley to cool up-and-comers like 686, Rome and Arcus, so you'll be able to sport some dope duds in the game, even if your budget limits you to Surfanic on the slopes. It also features some of the world's most influential riders such as Travis Rice, Annie Boulanger and Tadashi Fuse. If people like this are prepared to be involved with Stoked, chances are you should too.
